Seasonal flowers

Using seasonal flowers is the cornerstone of my floristry work, I’m lucky to work with my own farm grown flowers for the majority of our busy wedding season as well as utlilising the many flower farms that are local to me.

After the October to April outdoor growing season I work with our wholesaler to bring you the best NZ grown flowers that the season has to offer. I always work with the natural season of flowers and provide flowers grown with the least impact and input.

I never use imported flowers due to their massive carbon footprint to get them here, not to mention they are sprayed with chemicals (essentially roundup) as they enter the country.

Choosing flowers that are abundant at the exact week of your wedding means your wedding will reflect the season and be truly unique to you.

Honouring the seasonal nature of flowers and flowers varieties I would be amiss to not mention that when working with truly seasonal flowers means the colours change with the seasons too. I sometimes get asked for rich, deep and rusty tones in spring and to be honest, I will struggle.

It’s much much better to let the season guide your colour selections and I’m thrilled that more brides are seeking my guidance in this aspect, you will get more abundant an fitting flowers if you work this way I promise.

No Floral foam

Designing without the use of harmful floral foam

Floral foam is a single use plastic. As it breaks down easily if it gets into our waterways it means microplastics end up there too.

I’ve a self taught foam free florist, over the years I’ve built up many, many mechanics and ceramics to make my work foam free. All of my mechanics are reuseable and I use them over again on my events.

I make the smallest of arches to the largest of hanging installations without foam, and I am steadfast in my commitment to working without it.

It’s really easy to make this change and I want to encourage other florist’s to do the same, if you haven’t switched yet the best time to start is now.

Flower farm

Part of the the reason for purchasing the flower farm was to be able to be directly in touch with nature and make a direct connection to the land. We only use natural / organic methods to amend our soil and control pests and are working on being a regenerative farm. You can read more information about our flower farm here.

Here are some ways we work on our land to regenerate and re-establish our previous pastoral farmland.

Planting native trees and regenerating any spare corner we possibly can

We are regenerating our wetland and working on planting with native wetland loving plants

We are working with the Forest bridge Trust to create a predator free pathway that runs through our land out to the Kaipara Harbour, and create a safe pathway for our native fauna.

Circular

I love for my waste and cut offs from our events to become next seasons flowers, after your event we encourage you to take the flowers to enjoy or give to your guests, but if you can’t we take the flowers from your event to create our own compost here on our farm.
